Zachariah wants to get us back on the path with 14th Sunday of
ordinary time. “Rejoice heartily Jerusalem your King is coming”. Just a
couple of Sundays ago, Jesus tells his disciples and us that he has set his
face to go toward Jerusalem. The Israelites know what happens when a
prophet goes to Jerusalem to fulfill the will of the Father. Prophets go
for one thing — Repent and be saved — and there is only one outcome.
There is a cost to being a disciple.
Last week, we heard the conditions to become followers – forsake
the security of family. The Rewards of being open/receptive, being a
Prophet of God’s word, being a Righteous person, gains a Righteous
reward. The life is to follow God’s commandments and live by the law
and then simply for the price of a cool sip of water — heavenly rewards
can be guaranteed. If we are willing to accept a life of traveling with
Jesus, we can also praise the Father for having sent us a Savior // meek
that leads us to the gates of the “City of Peace”, Jerusalem. Our Savior
seeks to banish chariots and bow, the instruments of war and bring Peace
for all nations. This Messiah has dominion from Sea to Sea from the
River at the Genesis of humanity to the ends of the earth.
Jesus knows us well. We must leave behind the life we have
known, a culture that consumes and constantly calculates the cost of
things. The cost of things, might become uppermost in our minds.
Good work of the disciple, brings dignity and self-respect and provides
for their “daily bread”. Those who work in and for the world may labor
only for temporal things. They forget to praise God the Father and are
yoked to the things that are passing. Jesus says know the cost of what
you are doing. Know the true cost. Feel the cost. Jesus is yoked along
side. There is help and love from Jesus alongside, shared in a
community of disciples – a yoke that is easy and a burden light – if we
chose to be disciples.
